In the Window

I stare,

out the window,

world passing by,

wishing to grasp

with non-existent hands,

anything to rid me

of what makes me

an ugly word-

pressed against the window pane,

holding me back,

unbreakable glass

A Question about Dogs

A Question about Dogs

Today’s post is going to start with a question: Should service dogs be allowed in school?

Got your answer.

Ok, let me take it one step further. Should service dogs be allowed in school for teachers? As a teacher, am I allowed to have a service animal?

Believe it or not, this question has never been asked before in the district I teach at, so there is no policy for or against it. I can see the argument both ways. I know that having an animal in the school can be a liability issue. What if your child is allergic to dogs? What if the dog isn’t trained well and ends up hurting someone? What if the dog uses the bathroom in the middle of class?

These are all valid “what ifs” that need to be addressed, yet here is my counter argument. I know that having a service animal will help reduce my anxiety attacks in school. I know that having a service animal will make me a better and more focused teacher.

So the question is, do the pros outweigh the cons? I don’t know. I’m not going to pretend to understand all of the crazy legality issues that a school has to deal with on a day to day basis just to function. I’m not going to pretend and say that I understand what could happen and what all of this means. All I know is how I feel, and I do understand that that makes me biased.

So, I want to know what you think. Please respond to this and let me know your opinion. People who understand more of the legalities behind this situation, please weigh in. I want to hear your thoughts!!!
