Out of the Frying Pan

Now I understand
the old saying,
“out of the frying pan,
and into the fire”.
from one place
where the oil sears
and burns your skin,
making you tender,
so that every pop and sizzle
causes a permanent scar,
to the suffocating fire
where poison learns to live
in your lungs,
and the heat is so intense
that there are days
when you feel cold
just living there.

Now I understand
that I am the fuel
for these sources
of heat and pain,
perhaps a juicy piece of meat
in the the frying pan,
turned now to wood
to keep the fire alive,
tossed without regard
to the sacrifice made.
